Snowdrops 'In The Green'

What a way to welcome the arrival of spring!

Bountiful displays waken up dreary winter gardens – for those who aren’t already in the know, introducing these delightful Snowdrops!

Bursting into superb displays of tiny white flowers tinged with green at the centre, this isn’t a variety that waits until the warm weather to impress, instead springing to life around February and March.

These white beauties are far sturdier and hardy than they may appear – even able to display their worth if a blanket of snow falls on our gardens, as the stems burst through layers and reach up proud towards the sky.

While typically being seen as single-flowering blooms, Snowdrops are also available double-flowered, with each flowerhead displaying a smaller ruffled flower inside.

Snowdrops can be grown by a method known as ‘in the green’, which is when they are planted when still in leaf – this is known to deliver the best success possible, even from the first season.

‘In The Green’ plants will thrive when put out into a new position, as they establish far quicker than dry bulbs, leaving the grower with fuller flowering displays.

How to grow Snowdrops

For best results, be sure to plant Snowdrops either in early spring, between February and March, or in autumn, from September to October, in moist, yet well-drained soil in a partially shaded garden space.

A bonus aspect of this variety is that no pruning or training is needed when growing Snowdrops – just let the foliage naturally die back completely.

Be sure to divide large clumps every few years by lifting bulbs while leaves are still green. Split into smaller clumps, then replant.
