Enjoy The Delights Of Homegrown And Home-Made With Just One Recipe
Is your apple tree groaning under the weight of ripe, juicy apples? It's time to put those delicious fruits to good use! One of the easiest and most satisfying ways to enjoy your homegrown harvest is by making a classic apple crumble. This simple dessert is a comforting treat that's perfect for sharing with friends and family.
Best of all, it couldn't be simpler to make, requiring only a few ingredients and a bit of time in the oven - plus there won't be mountains of washing up afterwards to deal with!
You've done the hardest part in growing the apples yourself, now why don't you enjoy them in a special way this year, fashioned into a mouth-watering sweet treat.
What You’ll Need
- 575g cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced. Make sure each slice is about 1cm thick, typically three good-sized apples should suffice. Bramley Apples are ideal!
- 175 plain flour
- 135g golden caster sugar
- 110g cold butter
Apple Crumble Recipe
1 – Begin by preheating the oven to 190C / 170 Fan / Gas 5. Then toss your sliced homegrown apples with about 25g of the golden caster sugar. Place and spread the mixture into the bottom of a rounded tin, gently flattening down with your hand to condense – this will avoid any crumble from falling into gaps when you reach the next step!
2 – In a bowl, combine all the plain flour with the remaining golden caster sugar, as well as a pinch of salt to create the crumb mix. Gradually add slices of the cold butter, rubbing it in by fingertip until the whole mix is a moist breadcrumb-like texture.
3 – Pour the crumb onto the apple mix, with a pile at the centre, then use a regular fork to even out, for an attractive, decorative finish. Press onto the surface with the back of the fork to ensure the crumble holds together and crisps up when in the oven.
4 – Carefully set on an adequately sized baking tray, then place in the oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden to the eye. To check, insert a sharp knife into the crumble to check how firm the apple mix has become – very soft apple is a sign the crumble is ready to come out! Once out of the oven, leave it to cool for around 10 minutes before serving – and enjoy!
