Plug Plants – Sizes, Types & Care
When buying plug plants, it’s useful to know the different sizes available and how to care for them. Most plug plants are annuals designed for seasonal displays in flower beds, borders, hanging baskets, and pots. They are often classed as summer or winter plants, but many varieties will flower for six months or more.
Below is a guide to the different types of plug plants and how to look after them.
1. Pro Plugs & Pro+ Plugs
- Sizes: Available as Pro plugs and slightly larger Pro+ plugs.
- Description: These are the smallest plug plants, offering great value if you’re happy to grow them on before planting outside.
- Care:
- Pot them into larger trays or small pots.
- Grow on for 5–8 weeks in a greenhouse or on a bright windowsill.
2. Standard Plugs & Jumbo Plugs
- Description: These are larger than Pro plugs, as they’ve been grown on a bit more.
- Care:
- Pot into larger containers.
- Keep indoors or in a greenhouse for 4–6 weeks before planting outside.
3. Garden Ready Plants
- Description: As the name suggests, these are ready to be planted straight into the garden, planters, or hanging baskets.
- Care:
- Plant directly outdoors if no frost is forecast in your area.
